RESUMÉ

This is the most convenient and comprehensive collection available of treaties and agreements relating to the Arabian Gulf and peninsula. Detailed research has been undertaken to find new material including regional, inter-state and local treaties as well as exchanges of letters with legal weight; international treaties; boundary settlements; and trade and development agreements including those for oil and communications. There is a selection of important international treaties followed by agreements relating to: Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

This four volume work presents an extensive collection of treaties and agreements determining the modern history of the Arabian Gulf and Peninsula. While such a work cannot be fully comprehensive, detailed research has been undertaken to find and collate new material. The editors have broken new ground by reproducing international, regional inter-state and local treaties, agreements and exchanges of letters, many of which have not been previously published. The work also includes relevant boundary settlements; trading agreements including oil; agreements for infrastructure development including road, rail, air and mining; financial agreements including loans and subsidies. Many of the treaties are in both Arabic and English.
In some cases related correspondence is included, particularly where it has diplomatic or legal relevance or especially elucidates agreements. In other cases the choice of documents is representative rather than comprehensive. For example, only the most important boundary agreements have been included and not the multitude of boundary claims which precede or succeed such agreements. Titles of treaties are given exactly as they are printed and maps are not reproduced, although references are given.
The treaties are arranged by country with an introductory selection of important international treaties relating to general commercial issues and to European political and territorial arrangements at the time of the First World War.
